déc. some great answers that add more depth; but i needed something simpler and more like the js console.log() command. i use php in a lot of "gathering data and turn into xml" in ajax application. the js console.log doesn't work in that case; it breaks the xml output. (maybe someone has a solution for this?)

one could use error_log function but even that makes you go to your log file and then see the output. of course, browser needs to support/have the console so that code result is output there. because ie less than doesn't have console, this won't work in ie less than , though result won't be affected in it.
