[editor's note: array at from dot pl had pointed out that count() is a cheap operation; however, there's still the function call overhead.] if you want to run through large arrays don't use count() function in the loops , its a over head in performance, copy the count() value into a variable and use that value in loops for a better

if you want to count all the same occurences inside the array, here's a function to count them all, and return the results as a multidimensional array: function countsame($array) { $count = count($array); $storearray = array(); while ($count > ) { $count; if ($array[$count]) { $a = $array[$count]; $count

i would use count() if they are the same, as in my experience it is more common, and therefore will cause less developers reading your code to say " sizeof() , what is that?" and having to consult the documentation. i think it means sizeof() does not work like it does in c (calculating the size of a datatype).

in php, the total number of elements in an array can be calculated by a couple of php functions count() and sizeof(), where as the sizeof() is an alias of the master function count(). we are going to see about these functions in this article in detail with suitable examples for calculating php array length. you can use the php count() or sizeof() function to get the number of elements or values in an array. the count() and sizeof() function returns for a variable that has been initialized with an empty array, but it may also return for a variable that isn't set. you can use use the isset() function to check whether a variable is set

it's well known that calling count($array) in a for loop in php is slower than assigning the count to a variable and using that variable in the for loop instead. however until recently, i wasn't aware that the assignment to a variable can be done in the for loop itself and share this here in this post.
